More Than Just Groceries: Essex Street Market

A surprising number of residents seem to be trekking all the way out to Trader Joe's instead of taking advantage of the wonderful and affordable vendors right up the street.

If you for some insane reason already haven't, make your way up to the Essex Street Market.

The grocery vendors have a strong variety of produce, herbs, canned goods, snacks and everything else you need on a weekly basis. Further inside, you'll come across butchers and the such to get some of the best meats and fish in town.

The Essex Market is also home to the Brooklyn Taco stand for a quick lunch and Davidovich Bagels all day for your bagels and lox needs. Porto Rico has amazing coffee for $1.25 and way in the back you can grab an ice cream cone to embrace the approaching summer.

Check out the full list of vendors here

Spring Fever

Spring Fever isn't just a slang term, but an actual medical condition. Symptoms included elevated happiness, urge to exercise, increase sexual desire, and liveliness. In the Huffington post article linked below, this change in mood is due to our eyes taking in more light and effecting the chemicals in our brains. Be aware of your bodies changes and read the article here.

Make the Most of Your Summer

Finals are burning you out and all you can think about are those summer days just weeks away that you'll be spending in the sun or laying around at home. Yes, a few naps and freedom from deadlines is well deserved, enjoy it! But are you really going to spend all those months hanging around?

As a college student, you should be exploring your options and embracing your ambitious goals and dreams. Look for a summer job or internship, make the most of your days outside of the classroom.

Make the effort to find a job in a field you have an interest in, not just a mind-numbing afternoon buffer to get you off the couch. If you are interested in an internship, make sure you can get college credit for it if it's not paid. Don't sign up for "experience" alone.

I personally used this site, internmatch.com to find internships and jobs in fields I may want to work in down the road. Remember, you don't have to work specifically in a field you're studying in school! Be curious!

Here are some other sites you may want to check out that were suggested on the Huffington Post:

7 Foods to help improve concentration.

The end of the semester is approaching and so begins the last push that will test our mental, physical, and emotional capacity. I've compiled a list of foods that can help improve your concentration and help you finish that final project.

1) Coffee. We all know caffeine is great for those early mornings after a late night. The only reason I mention caffeine is because too much can cause you to be unproductive. So watch the caffeine intake.

2) Glucose. Glucose are the natural sugars found in fruits (oranges, apples, or bananas). While sugar infused energy drinks can be helpful for staying awake, too much can in fact cause you to be unproductive. So watch the sugar intake as well.

3) Breakfast. More specifically cereal. A High-fiber, dairy and fruit breakfast will improve concentration throughout the day. Outshine your classmates while they are daydreaming and you impress the professor because you are alert enough to laugh at his jokes.

4) Fish. The omega-3 oil found in fish is essential for enhancing memory. Treat yourself to sushi twice a week to gain long term effects of a powerful memory.

5) Chocolate and nuts. Both these foods are rich with antioxidants which maintain long-term brain health. Also, enjoying an ounce of dark chocolate a day gives your the proper caffeine boost without any negative effects on your pants size.

6) Avocado and Whole Grains. These foods improve blood flow throughout your body giving your brain cells an extra boost.

7) Blueberries. Blueberries are an amazing food that when eaten throughout a lifetime maintain muscle and brain health. Get into the habit of eating blueberries weekly.

Lastly maintaining a good sleep schedule, exercising everyday, staying hydrated, and taking a few moments everyday to relax are habits that will promote life-long health and improve concentration for finals. Here is my source.

Goodbye Roseland!

The Roseland, the historic venue will hold it's last concert tonight, with Lady Gaga. For the last week this concert hall has had completely sold out performances by the famous Lady Gaga and now it is time to say goodbye!

In November 2013, it was announced that Lady Gaga would headline six shows, and these shows will be the final performances at the venue. Additionally a seventh show was added to be held on April 7. This officially is the last performance held at this venue.

The Roseland Ballroom has been around since 1917 and 95 years it has created a lot of great memories for many New Yorkers.

According to some news articles the space of the Roseland will be used to create a new apartment complex.

That's very sad!

Spring Cleaning! WOOHOO

Just a single month remains of this semester. The smell of finals and unwashed students linger in the buildings as we all settle into our final lap before May.

You'll hardly have time to blink between finishing your projects and move-out day (or so it'll seem), so when you have a minute to breathe, make your life a little easier and maybe straighten your room out. Spring Cleaning!

You literally have one room, hop to it!

1. Collect all that garbage under bed and desk and from behind your door. You may find a missing sock or set of headphones back there. You won't know unless you look!

2. Throw all those moldy and ice-burned whatevers out from the fridge.

3. Dare to take a Clorox wipe and clear those layers of dust and grime from all the hard surfaces. (Desk, cabinets, window sill, refrigerator, microwave, countertops, etc.)

4. Wash or take your winter coats to the cleaners to be put away for next season.

5. Use a mop, rag or Swiffer to remove all the tracked in and caked on junk off the floor.

6. Smile and take a deep breath of clean air. :)

Not only will doing this make it easier to organize and pack your room up later, but it will most certainly help de-stress you now. You'd be surprised how much of difference it can make in your mood to have a freshly cleaned room instead of a cave of clutter.

What are you waiting for??? Head across the street and grab some cleaning supplies now!

Best of luck!

Now You Know

I found this article on buzzfeed about New York. There are some things on the list that shocked me like Washington square park used to be a cemetery and there are 20,000 bodies buried there. Or there used to be an 18th street station on the 6 train and can still be seen from the train. Here is the article. Comment below about the most interesting fact to you.

Hana Sushi - Great Lunch Special!

If you like sushi then you should definitely try Hana Sushi. It is very good sushi for a very good price! About two weeks ago I tried it for the first time and I've had it multiple times since then.

So far I have only tried the Sushi & Sashimi Combo Lunch Special. My order contains 4 pieces of chef selected Sushi, 6 pieces of chef selected Sashimi and 1 (6 piece) California roll for the price of $13.00! And it is so good!!!
