FINALS!!!

Hey y'all!

Its that time of the year.

~ FINALS ~

And we know how stressful that can be. Its important to be working hard, but to also remember to take care of yourself. Last night there were snacks in the basement for all the residents chuggin' away at their final projects and papers. Here at Ludlow we encourage hard work, but also think that taking a cookie break isnt such a bad idea ;)

Keep working hard and look out for more programs coming in 2015!

Rice Cooker mac and cheese

What you'll need

-strainer
- 2 cups of pasta
- 1 bag of shredded mozzarella or any other cheeses of your choice
-chicken broth
-1/2 cup milk
-4 table spoons butter
- (optional) Bread crumbs (panko are my favorite)

Instructions

First put the two cups of pasta into your rice cooker and fill up the rice cooker with the chicken broth so that it's covering the pasta a little bit. Turn on the rice cooker and allow pasta to cook until tender, I suggest checking after 25 minutes to make sure the pasta hasn't already cooked and isn't burning on the bottom of the pot. After pasta is done cooking place pasta in strainer to drain any left over chicken broth and shake out, do not put under cold water as the warmth of the pasta is needed to melt the butter. Put pasta back in rice cooker, put in butter and milk and mix pasta until butter has completely melted. After, take the shredded cheese and mix in with as much cheese as desired making sure there is an even amount of cheese in the pot, after this place breadcrumbs on top (if desired). Put lid on pot and turn rice cooker on 5-10 to allow cheese to deliciously melt in the pasta. Take off lid and enjoy!

Post Pool Tournament

Well it was a bloody battle from the beginning. 10 players from the right out of the gate matched up with each other in the ultimate showdown of the Fall Semester.  Some upsets, and some clear victorious but over all every one seemed to enjoy themselves.
The main highlights of the afternoon boil down to:
Chan of the 18th floor took home the precious winnings of 2 movie tickets.
   Omar coming in 2nd.
One disqualification for not showing up
   And finally everyone having fun.

If you want to improve your craft at the game of they call pool or billiards, check out this link, for there will be another tournament in the Spring semester.... MUHAHAHAHA!

DIY Holiday Decor!

It's holiday season and you can be sure New York City will make sure you know. The stores on Fifth Avenue are all glittering, the tree at Rockefeller was just lit up and the snowflakes outside Ludlow have been hanging for a month or so now.

If you want to bring some of that holiday cheer into your own room, here are some examples and inspiration:

Pin up lights, yarn, some branches and hang whatever cards or ornaments you have on them.

You really can't go wrong with string lights. Try some non-glass ornaments or paper snowflakes to bring in the season.

We all have some extra white acrylic paint and soup cans, so a small snowman can for pens and such is a nice touch :)

Pinterest has a million and a half paper cone tree ideas and more.  A small LED light is all you need after  that!

Honestly, who doesn't appreciate a nice paper snowflake?

5 holiday songs!

As it is now December it's time to start listening to festive music! Here are five tracks to help you get in the spirit and hopefully spread some joy!

Frozen - Let it go

Band Aid 30 - Do they know

Mariah Carey - All I want for Christmas is you

Justin Bieber - Santa Claus is coming to town

The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

Welcome Back Residents!! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ~♥

First I'd like to extend a warm welcome to all residents back from their holiday break. Weather you went back home or stayed at ludlow and mentally clocked out for the past few days, theres only about two and a half weeks left of classes! I hope all your finals go well and I hope everyone gets all their projects done and handed in on time. It's also okay if things happen to be a little late, don't beat yourself up over that, especially if you tried your hardest. Since turkey season is over I've been hearing nothing but christmas songs over the radio, honestly I'm one of those people that never get tired of it. I'm ready to dive head first into this metaphorical, christmas themed, peppermint smelling pool of joy. So sorry if I get a bit obnoxious with these christmas posts but my blood is screaming for Holiday cheer. Living in NYC means tons of opportunities to celebrate this consumerist holiday, below I'll list some events to get you into the Christmas spirit.

The Wonder Years

During the Thanksgiving break, I was introduced to the show The Wonder Years. I have heard it referenced before but I never knew the power it had because I had never watched it. Well... Now I have watched it and I am addicted. It is on Netflix and I say it is powerful because it brought up memories from my growing up in middle school.

The show is told from the perspective of Kevin Arnold, a 12 year old kid in 7th grade. The show is about his growing up and the experiences of a 12 year old learning the word in school, among his parents and in other families... The Wonder Years in everyones life.

I am currently on season 3 and I an captured by the innocent love between Kevin and his neighbor Winnie Cooper. They like each other and shared their first kiss (SPOILER) but like any pre teen relationship... it's nervous and comfortable. It's adorable.

Each episode refreshes an old memory I had back when I was in middle and high school. Some great and some horrible but that's life. It's a wonderful show and still holds true to modern culture even though the show takes place during the late 1960's.

It's an adorable, sad, growing up show that I am in love with now. Make the right choice on life!.. or don't... it's all about learning and becoming an adult.

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is in a few days and are you ready? Whether you'll be going home to spend it with family, staying with friends here or eating with us at Ludlow - Thanksgiving is a time to relax and process the year so far! A well-deserved break for us all haha.

Once you do gorge yourself silly on all the delicious food you have two options. 1 is to take a long nap and then try and stuff more pumpkin pie in you. 2 is to sit back, relax and watch Charlie Brown. It's such an iconic special and a tradition for many people. In case you don't know what I'm talking about or won't have access to a TV this year - here it is for your watching pleasure!

Enjoy, have a great week and come back rested and ready to kick ass for finals!

I AM BARTAH

Last Thursday I held an event I called: The Exchange. The program was about bartering things that you no longer needed. Year after year I see residents leave a lot of things behind. One reason is it much cheaper and simpler to leave it behind and another main reason is that you no longer needed these items. So instead of getting rid of unwanted items without seeing returns, my program was trying to allow residents opportunity to improve the quality of their possessions. Below are pictures from the event:

Leaving For The Holidays Checklist

Hey residents heres just a reminder that if you are leaving the building to go home for the thanksgiving holidays to turn on your heater and close your windows. But before you're off to stuff yourself full of turkey, heres a checklist of things you might want to do so that when you return you're free of chores and ready to push through finals!

  • Turn on your heater and close your window- I can't emphasize this enough, if it gets to cold your pipes could freeze and then burst. Coming home to a flooded room is not fun.
  • Do your laundry- Clean clothes are really nice and so is clean underware. It's good to get it all out of the way as soon as possible. Maybe even wash your sheets? How long has it been since you've washed those?
  • Clean your room- Push out the clutter, sweep the floor, dust off your shelves, throw out your garbage, wash any dirty dishes. There, now doesn't that feel a lot better and when you come back you can just lay down and chill.
  • Clean your bathroom- You poop in there, that should be reason enough to want to clean this place.
  • Water your plants- If you're like me and have tons of floral friends make sure to give them some substance before you go. I'm sure they would appreciate it a lot more then pumpkin pie.
  • Do any Homework that you can finish here- Why worry about homework when you're trying to enjoy yourself? Finish any homework you you know can be done as soon as possible.
  • Don't forget to bring homework-  Lets be realistic here you won't be able to do all your homework before you go, nothings worse than realizing once your home that theres a paper due Monday on a book you have yet to read.  So bring that book with you so you can get it done, hopefully.
  • Pack- Don't forget to pack all the things you need for going home, aren't you glad you did laundry? You have a lot more clothes than you realized.
  • Say bye to your bathroom mate-  Its something nice to do, I'm sure they would really appreciate it. Consider it.
  • Look at what the weather is going to be like before you go- If you're going far away look at what the weather is going to be like in your destination, especially if you're traveling to a place thats known to be warm.Unless you still live in the upper east coast or Minnesota or something.  I assure you, you will not be using shorts anytime soon. Put those thighs away.

Thanksgiving Day!

Thanksgiving is this THURSDAY! Whoooooooohooooooooo!

What to do on Thanksgiving? In my personal opinion, Thanksgiving is a time for family and relaxing, meaning you can wait to go shopping. Save it for Black Friday... that's what that is there for.

There are just so many amazing things to do on Thanksgiving though!

1) Spend time with family! If you don't like family...see numbers below.

2)Watch football! It is a tradition that on Thanksgiving that the Detroit Lions and The Cleveland Browns play- not necessarily against each other, but on Thanksgiving day.

3) EAT! Food brings family and friends together. Food is what makes the world go round. Now... if you don't like family, friends, or just don't have friends... then stuff your face in food! There is a danger in eating so much food though. Besides weight gain... SLEEPINESS WILL FALL UPON YOU! It is scientifically proven that the combination of turkey and gravy releases chemicals in the body that puts people to sleep!

4) Sleep! Now you want to sleep... then please refer back to number: 3 or 1 (given the family)

5) Shovel snow. Depending upon where you are in the continental US, you may have 10 feet of snow above you. So if none of the above tickles your fancy... go be productive and shovel snow. This will get you on your good side with parent. If you live alone, it will be a good thing to get off your chest and it will be very therapeutic.

In all seriousness... HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Gobble Gobble!    :)

26 Ways To Be Kind To Yourself

Let's face it school is tough that is why it is important to treat yourself kindly. Here are somethings you can do to make yourself feel good.

1. Clean your living space it will make you feel awesome.

13. Plan a fun activity

14. Hug someone. Science has shown that like smiling giving or receiving a hug boosts your mood.

17. Get some natural sun.

20. Jump on your bed like you are a child again.

21. Try a new flavor of ice cream.

22. Take a shower, wash your face, clip your finger nails. There is nothing like feeling clean.

23. Wear bright colors.

24. Do something you haven't done before and make new friends.

25. At the end of the day write down all the good things that happened to you that day.

26. Take a deep breath and let go of your past.

Here is a funny video to brighten your day.

Screw the Latke Festival, Make Your Own!

Nothing says Jewish comfort food like a fat, fried potato pancake, but nothing says obnoxious like an $80 ticket to a Latke Festival.... So you know what I say? Make your own!

For those who aren't familiar with the latke story or even what they are, Wikipedia has you covered:

Potato pancakes are shallow-fried pancakes of grated or ground potatoflour and egg, often flavored with gratedonion or garlic and seasoning. Potato pancakes may be topped with a variety of condiments, ranging from the savory (such as sour cream or cottage cheese) to the sweet (such as apple sauce or sugar), or they may be served ungarnished. Potato pancakes are sometimes made from mashed potatoes to produce pancake-shaped croquettes.

Latkes (לאַטקע) are traditionally eaten by Jews during the Hanukkah festival. The oil for cooking the latkes is symbolic of the oil from the Hanukkah story that kept the Second Temple of ancient Israel lit with a long-lasting flame that is celebrated as a miracle. Prior to the introduction of the potato to the Old World, latkes were, and in some places still are, made from a variety of other vegetables, cheeses, legumes, or starches, depending on the available local ingredients and foods of the various places where Jews lived.

Check out this easy-to-follow recipe to make your own:

ingredients

  • 1 pound potatoes
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup olive oil
  • Accompaniments: sour cream and applesauce

preparation

Preheat oven to 250°F.
Peel potatoes and coarsely grate by hand, transferring to a large bowl of cold water as grated. Soak potatoes 1 to 2 minutes after last batch is added to water, then drain well in a colander.
Spread grated potatoes and onion on a kitchen towel and roll up jelly-roll style. Twist towel tightly to wring out as much liquid as possible. Transfer potato mixture to a bowl and stir in egg and salt.
Heat 1/4 cup oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Working in batches of 4 latkes, spoon 2 tablespoons potato mixture per latke into skillet, spreading into 3-inch rounds with a fork. Reduce heat to moderate and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes. Turn latkes over and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes more. Transfer to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Add more oil to skillet as needed. Keep latkes warm on a wire rack set in a shallow baking pan in oven.
cooks' notes:·Latkes may be made up to 8 hours ahead. Reheat on a rack set over a baking sheet in a 350°F oven, about 5 minutes.
·Grating the potatoes, soaking them briefly in water, and then squeezing out the liquid (as we've done here) keeps the batter from turning brown too quickly.

I Love Anime

Now that I think about it, my first encounter with anime was at an early age. I remember animes like Gotcha man (also know as G force)... perhaps you could call Silver Hawks anime, but I am not sure. But what I am sure of is the first time I knew that I was watching anime. And, yes, I am talking about the probably the most famous, the anime-starter kit show: Dragonball Z. I had never seen anything like it in my life. And I had often wondered--I am sure like other kids-- was any one else feeling this excited about a animated show. One thing i loved about Japanese animation was the buildup to an exciting episode.

Ever since then I have been hooked to anime. Currently, thanks to my friend Jay, I have been watching One Piece. I admit I never thought i would like One Piece, but it is very good. The storytelling is amazing. They get you to fall in love with these characters.

if you interested in watching anime, maybe you could start with my top three:

1) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

2) Trigun
3) Samurai Champloo

Cat Cafe opening down the road!

That's right. You heard me. A cat cafe (just like those in Asia) is opening in NYC. The best part? It's opening down the road on Hester St between Ludlow and Essex. Mind officially blown.

The Meow Parlour is opening this December and will consist of two areas. The first will be essentially a treat cafe with coffee, brownies, cookies, cat shaped cakes etc. The second will be the playroom full of kitties. Everything is pretty decently priced and for cat time it's $4 for half an hour or $30 for five hours. All the cats are from KittyKind (a non-profit cat rescue organisation) and therefore if you fall in love, you can adopt him/her!

I'm not really a full on cat person but I'll definitely be checking this out. It's one of those soon to be unique NYC experiences and the first food-feline place in NYC. For more info check out their site here. And I guess I'll see you there in December!

Instant Ramen Done Right

So it's cold and miserable out and all you want is a big bowl of deliciousness to warm your insides up. Soup sounds great, but with all the sodium in the canned ones, you'd rather not. Fresh soups can pull at your wallet, so you move onto the next best thing: ramen. Cheaper than cardboard but packed with about half your intake of sodium and junk, it's not much better. But guess what? It totally can be!

Check out this article from the Huffington Post for some really awesome recipes to make from that noodle staple in the college diet. My favorite is the mushroom and spinach version with the egg...Mmm...

Mushrooms & Spinach Ramen Sautee With An Egg

College is expensive and challenging on a student budget, but you shouldn't compromise your health and nutrition over it! A little creativity goes a long way with your diet during these crucial years and can solidify your eating habits for the better...or worse if you aren't careful. Eat up!

You should be going to Model NIght!

Last Tuesday we had Ludow's second Model Night, our model Cesar was a wonderful model and even implemented a pool stick into his poses which made for dynamic drawings. Everyone who went had a great time and the practice always helps. Next model night is going to be on the ninth of December at seven PM sharp, if you plan to join us please be considerate of the model and show up at least five minutes ahead of time so that we won't have people going through the curtains while the model is working.  Having a live model is a great way to practice and obtain an understanding of weight in a subject that you just can't get from looking at photographs. Drawing from real life can be a bit frustrating at times, especially if you're doing it while on the subway or in a park, people just keep moving and you aren't able to fully capture the persons likeness from the short about of time that you have. Model night is a free event offered by Ludlow where you can sit down and relax while drawing a still model, it's a good breather from upcoming finals. If you have some free time consider Ludlow's Model Night next month!!

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL: Staying Awake in Class

Hello. Hola. Shalom.

Times are tough because every teacher/professor in the world likes to give papers and finals right before the greatness of Thanksgiving... these teachers/professors are not so giving.

In the spirit of the giving fun, here are some tips from a reliable source on the internet that can help you stay awake in class. Stay awake! Stay alert! Enjoy!

1) Eye drops: My personal favorite, eyedrops are to your eyes, as coffee is to your bloodstream. It’s one of the easiest ways to feel refreshed instantly.

2) Caffeine: We have serious caffeine addictions here at TP. If the baristas start to recognize you…you’re doing it right. In preferred order: coffee, tea, and–last resort–energy drinks.

3) Eat food: If your teacher or professor allows it, take food to class to keep up your blood sugar levels. Anything along the lines of trail mix with protein and carbs are great sources for quick energy.

4) Ask questions! This is a given: clarify what you don’t understand, and maximize what you’re getting in from each lecture.

5) Pressure points: Two of the best, and conveniently subtle, pressure points to keep you up are your earlobes, and wrists. For your ear, while it may look like you’re just leaning your cheek on your wrist, rub the area right above your lobe (or where a traditional ear piercing would be) between your thumb and index finger. Not only is it fine motor movement to keep you active, but also invites blood to rush up towards your ear, and therefore, to your head. My roommate let me in on her trick: putting the inside of your wrists against something cold: the metal bar of your desk, the desktop, your laptop – she swears the pressure point here will keep you awake! (We get through Monday morning chem lab lectures together, so trust us, it works.)

6) Small, repetitive movements: Foot tapping and chewing gum, just like rubbing the pressure point in your ear, “wakes up” those muscles, returning blood to those areas and reinvigorating your blood circulation.

7) Where to sit in lecture/class: FRONT ROWS. ALWAYS. No matter how exhausted you are, you will probably be too terrified out of your mind to dare and fall asleep in the front. Second best bet: Middle! Stay away from doors (too tempting to sneak out, or get distracted by people walkingin), and from windows. Yes, windows just a world of daydreaming asking to happen. And deadzone are the “cheap seats”, or back rows. Yes. Facebook. Facebook everywhere.

8) Friends: But seriously, consider asking the person next to you to just poke you (punch you?) if you doze off. Heaven knows that’s happened to me already. We made pacts to always sit in the front rows. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is get through as much as you can, and catch up on sleep and work earlier in the night, then crash. Good luck Prospies!

Comics and the lets make comic event

Last Sunday, Mike and I held a great event we called: Lets make comics. The idea behind the event was to simulate the process of making comics within the comic industry. The reality of the comic book industry is that each comic book project usually has at least 3-4 people working on a series doing various jobs. These jobs include: writing, penciling, inking, lettering, coloring. This not only helps the production to go faster, it also produce unique works that a single artist would have not been able to produce by himself. During the event we produced one comic that several persons worked on. We also worked on individual projects. Below are pictures of what we made at the event.

Ludlow Live Wire PSA, Y'all

If you're like me, your files are very important to you. As students we are constantly on the move with our hard drives. A portable hard drive is a very sensitive object and has to be taken care of.

If you're like me then you just dropped your hard drive and lost important files.

Don't be like me.

If you do damage your hard drive, try and recover the files immediately. If you can't salvage anything try taking your hard drive to Tekserve.

Treat your files with care.
Don't be like me.

This was a PSA sponsored by The Ludlow Live Wire

Stress is Whack!

A bunch of residents got together yesterday to get out their stress through hitting. Not hitting each other of course… but hitting pinatas! It was fun to have something to whack at and the relief of letting go and getting your anxieties and worries physically out there is great. That's why punching bags can be so relaxing!

The pinatas were full of candy, condoms and stress tips/quotes to hopefully help residents survive these long weeks coming up. Finals and the end of the semester are looming but we just have to keep pushing through it!

Thanks to everyone who came out and took a whack!

Laser Cat MEOW!

WHAT IS LASER CAT?!

Laser Cat is gigantic feline-shaped art installa-tion that projects the personal pro-jects of professional creatives through its laser-beam eyes. Yes. It is. Laser Cat, in all its inflatable glory, is a project by ADC (Art Directors Club), the world's first organization dedicated to the advertising and design community. ADC's near-century long mission is to honoring the artistry and craftsmanship of commercial art by embracing the world of fine art. Laser Cat follows that mission by rallying graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, copywriters, art directors, filmmakers to take off their professional hats, if only for a moment, and celebrate the childlike enthusiasm that lead so many of us to our careers in the first place. Laser Cat is serious passion without being the slightest bit serious. Of course ADC could not have created Laser Cat without the vision, talent and audacity of Hungry Castle, the Barcelona-based creative duo whose projects blend fashion and public art have made a global impression.

Mexican Corn!

Hey guys! So we had our Mexican Corn program a week ago and it was great!

Many residents showed up to the How to...Mexican Corn program and enjoyed a splendid cup of traditional Mexican corn! Some even took doubles! It was great and very bonding within the community! Hope everyone that attended the program enjoyed it and remake the Mexican Corn during those all nighters or just when you are with friends!
