The Pope in NYC...

Say five Hail Mary's and say it's Christmas in September because Pope Francis is coming to NYC tomorrow September 25th! However... this city is going to be a zoo of commotion. I do not suggest going up town above 50th street because the Pope will be at Central Park. Trains, busses, cabs, cars are going to be jammed with people. I wish I had an easy solution to avoid the madness but sadly I don't know what to say other than to walk to places. :)

The Pope will be traveling from Central Park West to 5th Ave and 59th to 81st Streets. Central Park will be closed from 5am-7pm on the 25th!

Nuns are camping out already awaiting the Pope's arrival.

And you really really want to the Pope... I would advise not to sneak in... security is just gonna be bananas tomorrow.

AV Club Viewing Party

This upcoming Monday (the 28th) will be the first meeting of Ludlow AV Club. We'd love to know what films or albums you want to talk about. Let's share our interests and have a rad time.

Besides talking about film and music, we're also going to have a viewing session at the end. Here's list of film we're planning to watch. Vote on the one you want us to play on Monday night!

Children of Men
(Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller)
In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have become somehow infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.

Mystic River
(Crime, Drama, Mystery)
With a childhood tragedy that overshadowed their lives, three men are reunited by circumstance when one has a family tragedy.

A History of Violence
(Crime, Drama, Thriller)
A mild-mannered man becomes a local hero through an act of violence, which sets off repercussions that will shake his family to its very core.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
(Biography, Crime, Drama)
Robert Ford, who's idolized Jesse James since childhood, tries hard to join the reforming gang of the Missouri outlaw, but gradually becomes resentful of the bandit leader.

The Act of Killing
(Documentary, History)
A documentary which challenges former Indonesian death-squad leaders to reenact their mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

Let us know which film you'd like to watch! Come join us for some delicious snacks and good vibe!

Frida Kahlo Exhibition

We all know the amazing and talented Frida Kahlo. Not only has she become a prominent figure in pop culture, but most importantly, she was and still is one of the few women pioneers to create an impact in the art world.

Now until November 20th, The New York Botanical Garden, will be having a Frida Exhibit that will show the different interest that Frida had. Being the month of Mexico Independence, what a better way to celebrate than to visit this amazing exhibition of one of Mexico's most admired artist, Frida Kahlo.

Tobey Maguire Chess Movie

I don't know about chess. I just know I like playing the game. I also know of one chess player, probably the most famous of them all-- Bobby Fischer.

Boby Fischer was the Mozart of chess. Meaning... he was a genius. At age 15 he became a Grandmaster and won national championships. From the big Brooklyn, NY, Bobby eventually went the formally Soviet Union for competition.

That is where the film Pawn Sacrifice, coming out everywhere September 25th, is set. Bobby Fischer, the genius will go to the USSR and play chess. Another epic and emotional story focussing around the Cold War.
Bobby Fischer will be played by Tobey Maguire (Spiderman, Pleasantville). Tobey was recently in the reimagining of the Great Gastby, and in my opinion, it is good that he gets a way from the Spidy-suit even though he has not been slinging webs since the early 2000s-- he is still talked about as Spiderman however.

Here is the link to the movie, Pawn Sacrifice:

Namaste Part 1

Child's pose, and now breathe.
Inhale. Exhale.

As the first week of school has passed we already have a new burden of stress on our shoulders. As a way of de-stressing Yoga To The People provides free yoga to all who come. Even if you don't have a yoga mat it's only $2 to rent, and though it is a donation based center no one felt like they had to give anything if their heart truly desired.

After yoga everyone felt so relaxed. Getting to meet new SVA students and having them mingle with Ailey students was truly a joy!

Keep this quote in mind as you go through the beginning of your fall term.

"A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there." -unknown

Namaste.

Post-it Poetry Recap!

The air was very calm,
Thoughts swirling in the same breeze,
Success was not far.

Many haikus such as the one above were written at Post-it Poetry. Satisfaction on the faces of all whom wrote. The evening brought laughter, joy, and even a couple of stumped brains. But in the end, every laughed and enjoyed the wonderful experience. The poems written through out the night remain posted on the wall... for Facebook is not the only place to post things. Check out what you missed!

Ludlow Craft Night

After a long weekend of move ins we ended on a high note of crafts, food, and MTV VMA's. RA Charlotte and RA Caroline hosted a program with DIY crafts to spruce up your new room and had FREE Insomnia cookies as a treat. It was a pleasure to see all the new residents use their creativity to make a variety of straw mobiles and yarn wall hangings. Even if you didn't make anything everyone had the opportunity to mingle and make new friends!
